Depending on what workouts you have in your training plan, you could easily fit the intense ride, recovery ride, or tempo ride into your commute. 

RECOVERY RIDE:  The recovery ride can be shorter or longer than prescribed as long as the intensity is low. 

TEMPO RIDE/INTENSE RIDE: The key features of the intense and tempo ride to include are the intervals; you can stretch or shrink the warm-up and cool down to make this work for your commute while keeping the intervals and rest periods the same. This will give a very good workout while saving you time!
